Attention: Employers of Summer Students
The Ontario government’s Summer Jobs Service (SJS)
helps facilitate students find a summer job and provides a $2/hour
hiring incentive for employers who hire a student during the
summer.
Private sector employers operating and offering a summer job in Ontario
and are looking to hire students 15 to 24 years old (up to 29 years for
a person with a disability) are eligible to receive a hiring incentive
for a summer student placement an employer must also ensure liability
and workplace safety insurance coverage for the student placement and
not be related to the student.
There are two ways the employer can access the summer jobs program:
1. By connecting with a Job connect agency
2. Agency initiated placements (means that the SJS
agency had job-developed summer jobs with employers to be filled by
students who apply to the agency for the SJS program)
Scenario #1:
• An employer interested in the summer jobs incentive program
contacts a job connect agency (either using the web to locate an agency
near them, the Employers Hotline or by calling 211);
• The employer completes and submits the Summer Jobs application
form;
• The agency reviews the application to confirm eligibility requirements
(3-5 business days);
• The employer will be notified following the assessment/review
– once notified, the employer and can proceed with hiring a student;
Scenario #2
• The job connect agency initiates program with potential employers;
• Employers are required to complete the application form, which
is reviewed to determine eligibility (3-5 business days);
• The employer will be notified following the assessment/review
• The job connect agency places students who apply to the agency
(for the summer job program) with the employer
Payment or reimbursement schedules will be negotiated as part of the
agreement between the SJS delivery agency and the employer. However,
employers must submit all claims within 3 weeks after the placement
ends or by October 15 (whichever comes first). All claims must be processed
and completed by SJS delivery agencies by the end of October.
