Food Safety in
the Event of a Power Failure
A power failure can result in food becoming spoiled due to a
lack of refrigeration. Reduce the risk of foodborne illness during and
after a power failure by following these steps.
Frozen Food
• Frozen food will stay frozen for 2 days in a full upright
or chest freezer if the door remains closed. A half full freezer will
keep food frozen for approximately 1 day with the door closed. The time
can be maximized by keeping the door shut and by adding ice to the compartment.
• After power is restored, check food in the freezer and throw
out any thawed food. Food that still contains ice crystals can be refrozen.
Food that has thawed but is still below 4°C (40°F) can be cooked
immediately.
Refrigerated Food
• Refrigerated food will stay cold for 4 to 6 hours depending
on the room temperature.
• Keep the door closed as much as possible to conserve the cold
in the compartment.
• Ice can be placed in the compartment to help keep the refrigerator
cool.
• Tightly wrap raw meat, poultry or fish and place it in the coldest
section of the refrigerator to keep these foods as cold as possible.
• After power is restored, check food in the refrigerator and
throw out food that has been sitting out at room temperature for more
than 2 hours. Discard any food with a strange colour or odour immediately.
If in doubt, throw
it out!
