The provincial government is holding consultations across Ontario, over the next three months, to stimulate ongoing discussion among tourism industry leaders to contribute to a five-year tourism strategic plan. Consultation meetings were scheduled for Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Windsor, Peterborough, North Bay and Thunder Bay.
The Government is hoping to create a common vision for tourism that attracts more visitors, encourage longer stays and increase the economic benefits to the economy. While the Government recognizes the need for increased investment in marketing initiatives to ensure that Ontario remains competitive with neighbouring jurisdictions, Minister of Tourism and Recreation, Hon. Frank Klees, has recently said that the Government is not prepared, at this time, to allow regions or municipalities to levy a destination marketing fee on the price of hotel rooms. The Association continues to press the government for greater investment for marketing initiatives.
ORHMA members have already participated in Ottawa, Toronto, and Windsor and will continue to contribute throughout these discussions.
